Florida was affected by an earthquake today. I am not sure if I noticed it. It happened while we were in the church service this morning and that brings special circumstances.
- The building is built on a big foundation due to the fact that Florida is a big sand bar on top of hollowed out limestone. We are anchored in a big shock absorber.
- The walls are extremely solid steel reinforced concrete slabs welded together and supported by steel risers. They don’t rattle easily.
- The roof stretches across the worship center like a huge drum skin and it seemed as if it had been raining hard so it is like sitting in a drum while the percussionist is using the brushes.
I believe it was about 11:00AM or so when I heard an odd noise that sounded like a gathering rush of water and some thunder. If Elijah was there he would have leaned over and asked if God was in the sound, I just leaned over to my wife and said “Wow, that rain is loud.”
Funny story (that I have told a lot): A week or so after we started worshipping in the building back in June 1999 someone had left the roof access hatch open during second service. The parking ministry uses the roof to direct traffic controllers to empty parking spaces. At that time the High School class met on the third floor near the access hatch and a few of them decided to go on the roof and play. While in service I heard a few odd noises from up top, but then suddenly it started pouring rain and there was the pitter patter of big feet running across the roof. The floor under the access hatch was soaked and so were at least 4 teenagers who claimed that they had just gone to get something from their cars and were caught in the rain. I doubt they were parking on the roof.
