2 things I need, but cannot find.

I’m sifting through Google and Froogle looking for two items, but have not yet found what I need. There is just so much static out there it is hard to sift through.

1. A rolling equipment locker for AV equipment and other things.

2. A secure remote control system for outlets. I need something that is coded so that someone can’t just get a similiar item and use it without knowing the code.

Still searching . . .

Update 1: I knew it. In less than 10 minutes after posting I have a dozen options in the secured cart area. Let’s hope the same luck comes on the outlet controls.

Computer Gnomes got my Firewall

Because I have split the security camera recording across several different computers I have installed apache on each of them in order to allow better remote viewing of the videos.

The main server calls out to a file on each of the other servers. This file contains a list of the camera directories ordered by the most recent video recorded to that directory. These are received as arrays, merged, sorted, and displayed as links to the proper addresses.

Today the system suddenly stopped. I narrowed it down to one computer and I sat in fornt of that computer to trouble shoot. After several minutes of frustration I found that the Windows firewall was blocking port 80.

So, either the firewall was not set to allow port 80 and was just turned on or port 80 just fell off the list. THe computer had not rebooted itself and nobody has logged in since it last worked.

I blame computer gnomes. Perhaps the Linux ones are sabotaging me since I have been using KDE, Windows, and Mac while ignoring them.

Life is a PICNIC

There have been many ways to express the issue of users being the cause of computer problems.

There is the old GIGO issue: Garbage In, Garbage Out

There is the ID10T problem, and then PEBKAC: Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair.

We are using another one around here, the PICNIC: Problem In Chair, Not In Computer

We aren’t quite up for referring to L-Users yet, but what do you use to refer to “pilot error” issues?

CDex and Audacity Merging?

I admit I can be a bit out of date on some software. I still use Developer’s Pad for my php, txt, and html editing even though I have been waiting for it to be updating since 2001. When I started ripping audio for the church podcast I wanted somethingI had used before and quickly remembered CDex. I started using CDex in 1999 for ripping audio to my mp3 player (pre-iPod days even). Unfortunately, CDex has not updated since September 2003.

It looks as though CDex has a new Project Manager and there is chat about merging the project with Audacity.

Not sure what I think about it yet, but since when did lack of opinion stop a blogger?

BubbleShare

My grandfather took pictures. Lots and lots of pictures. He always had a film camera or a video camera with him and every important (or mildly interesting event) was stopped for him to get into position. Whenever we got together he would pull out a tape and show us the church chilli cookout it would always be his voice narrating the life of Missourri Valley, IA. It was sort of like the narrator voice on the Wonder Years.

Then there were the slides, millions upon millions of slides.
Anyway, I was checking out BubbleShare today and thought it was interesting. It is a sort of audio Flickr in which the photo streams can carry your narration of the pictures. I can see it as another Web 2.0 option for the church.

I almost feel the need to pull out photos from my 1998 trip to Israel.

Picture of a gaudy, ornate item intricately sculpted in gold and covered in thick layers of incense soot.

“Um, this is in one of the um . . . churches. I think it is the church of the holy . . . um . . . uh no, this is a decoration at the historic . . . or ancient tel of . . . No, this was at the airport.”

Picture of a brown landscape with lots of rocks.

“The tour guide pointed in that direction, but it was windy so I had trouble hearing. He may have been warning us about those camel droppings, but I didn’t want to risk missing anything.

On second thought, I’ll let someone else do the Bubble stream.

XL Super Bowl Stats

About 2 days ago I saw a Super Bowl XL sign and thought “Why are they referring to it as Extra-Large? Is that a marketing gimmick?”

Then I realized that it was just Super Bowl 40. I lost track since I haven’t really ignored any games in years (I think I was around a TV showing the Super Bowl back in 2001, but I cannot remember).

Anyway, Gizmodo has some Super Bowl Stats. And for all those numbers I might just see an ad or two later on in the week.

Because Women Want a Brawny Man

Okay ladies, grab your tissues.

Guys, get the pen and paper (unless you can easily type while watching an online video).

Honestly, chances are that you will need some paper towels after a few of these. Some will need it to wipe the tears of near convulsive laughter from their cheeks while others will have to wipe the stomache contents from the floor after some different convulsions.

Brawny’s Innocent Escapes are videos of a tough yet caring woodsman talking to a weak hearted woman with a camera implanted in her head. Although, it could have been inspired by Brokeback Mountain (See the Brokeback to the Future parody).

Anyway, I recommend the “Random Breakdown” listed in the premade area and the “Spider!” (under Shows of Strength) in the custom area. Avoid “Happy Birthday” if your stomache is really weak. “Because It’s Monday” almost made me fall out of my seat.
